Colonia del Sacramento, the historic coastal town

Colonia del Sacramento, the historic coastal town facing Buenos Aires on the other side of the Rio de la Plata, was first founded in 1680 and has changed hands many times since. Now a UNESCO world heritage site, the old town of Colonia is a popular entry point for tourists - thanks to a quick 50 min ferry ride from BA - and a wonderful introduction to Uruguay and its laid back way of life.

The magical rainbow bridge at @Raystede animal welfare centre - always a fantastic day out for little ones. Lots of animals and pets, play areas, a pond, cafe and shop. It's free to visit but donations are much appreciated as the sanctuary relies on them.

As you drive down the hill from Bled’s commercial centre, the famous view over Lake Bled with its tiny island and church comes into view. Originally the location of a temple dedicated to Živa the Slavic goddess of love, Bled island now houses the Church of the Mother of God on the Lake. But as if this wasn’t romantic enough, the stunningly turquoise lake is overlooked by Blejski grad, the picture perfect medieval castle sitting high atop the rocks on the opposite shore. Fushimi Inari Taisha is one of Japan's most famous shrines, mainly because of its thousands vermillion red torii which line the trails behind it. It's a truly fascinating sight, especially at night time. To ignorant eyes like mine the writing on each of the gates looks spiritual, but it is in fact a list of corporate sponsors (so I was told).
